The short answer
For pleasant weather and long opening hours, April, May and the second half of September and October are the best months. For the fewest visitors, come between November and March, when the hill closes at 17:00. In June, July and August, book the 08:00 slot.
The time of day makes a bigger difference than the month. Tour groups and cruise excursions arrive mostly between about 9 or 10 and 13 or 14 o'clock. Before the time slots were introduced, they made up around half of all daily visitors, according to the culture minister. Avoid that window and most visits are far more relaxed.

The best time slot by season
There are no official figures on the quietest hours, but independent reports show a consistent pattern.
June to August: 08:00
The first slot is the coolest and comes before most groups. By midday the plateau is very hot, and there is almost no shade. In heatwaves the ministry has closed the site from around noon to 17:00.
Opening hours and heat closures →Spring and autumn: late afternoon
In April, May, September and October the last 1.5 to 2 hours before closing are usually the quietest. The light is softer and the temperature drops. Remember last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
Book a time slot →Winter: any time, but not too late
From November to March crowds are smallest. The site closes at 17:00 and the north slope already at 15:30, so start no later than early afternoon.
Combine with the museum →Avoid the mid-morning peak
Groups and cruise excursions from Piraeus mostly come between about 9 or 10 and 13 or 14 o'clock. They tend to arrive at the main west entrance. The south entrance is often quieter.
Entrances →Free days: cheap, but very busy
On 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September and 28 October entry is free for everyone. These days are very crowded. Certain Sundays in winter are free too; the official sources disagree on which ones, so check the list on hh.gr. If saving €30 is not important to you, pick another day.
Also consider the season if you rely on a reduction: Greek and EU citizens over 65 pay the reduced €15 only from 1 October to 31 May. EU citizens up to 25 and non-EU children up to 18 enter free all year.
What to wear and bring
- Flat shoes with grip. The marble paths and steps are polished smooth and slippery. The ministry recommends shoes suitable for walking.
- A hat and sun protection. There is hardly any shade on the plateau.
- Water. Bring water with you, because places to get a drink at the top are scarce.
- A small bag only. Small backpacks and handbags are fine. Large suitcases are not allowed, and the cloakroom does not take them.
- Use the toilets first. The toilets on the site are closed for renovation. There are toilets just outside the main entrance.
- ID if you have a reduced or free ticket.
The ministry's rules also ban inappropriate clothing or behaviour, smoking, pets other than assistance dogs and touching or taking stones.

Evening visits
The Acropolis is not open at night for regular visitors. In summer the latest entry is 19:30, which gives you the evening light on the hill until closing at 20:00. The only official option after hours is the private Acropolis Experience: €5,000 per group of up to 5, from 1 April to 31 October on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, starting at 6:00 or 20:00.
For the lit-up Acropolis after dark, walk up the Areopagus or Philopappos Hill. Both are free. The rock and steps on the Areopagus are very slippery, so watch your footing in the dark. Philopappos Hill is open around the clock but can be closed when fire risk is high. On Fridays the Acropolis Museum stays open until 22:00. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, main stage of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, is closed for restoration for at least three years from summer 2026.
Winter visits
Winter is the quietest time. Highs of 13 to 19 °C make walking comfortable, and the hill is far less busy than in summer, except on free Sundays. The trade-offs are shorter hours (08:00 to 17:00, north slope 08:30 to 15:30), more rain from November to February and the closure days around Christmas and New Year. Ticket prices are the same as in summer. Bring a rain jacket and shoes with good grip, since wet marble is even more slippery.
