Acropolis Guided Tours

A good guide turns a hill of ruins into a story. But many Acropolis tours price only the guide, and the entry ticket costs extra. Here is how the tour types compare and how to read what you are actually booking.

Is a guided Acropolis tour worth it?

The Acropolis is not hard to visit on your own. Signs are clear, the hill is compact, and the official Digital Guide app has been included in the ticket at no extra cost since March 2026. If you like to read up beforehand and move at your own pace, you do not need a guide.

A guide is worth it if you want the context explained on the spot: why the Parthenon was built, what happened to it in 1687, which figures on the Erechtheion are copies and where the originals are. It also helps if you do not want to deal with booking a time slot yourself, or if you want to combine the hill and the Acropolis Museum with one person who connects the two.

What a guide cannot do is skip the queue. There is no official skip-the-line ticket. Every visitor, with or without a guide, needs a ticket with a time slot and goes through the same entrance check.

The key point: many tours price the guide, not the ticket

The most common surprise with Acropolis tours is the price. A low headline price often covers only the guide. The official Acropolis ticket, €30 in 2026 for adults, is offered as an add-on option, and you only have it if you select that option when booking. The same goes for the Acropolis Museum, which charges €20 (reduced €10) for its own ticket.

This is not a trick in itself. It lets visitors who already have a ticket, or who enter free, book just the guide. Visitors from EU countries up to 25 and children from outside the EU up to 18 enter the Acropolis free with ID, so for them a guide-only option makes sense. Just be clear about what you are paying for.

  • Guide only: you must have a valid ticket for the right date and a matching time slot. Without it, you cannot join the group at the gate.
  • Guide plus ticket: the operator books the time slot for you. Compare the total with the guide price plus €30.
  • Reduced or free entry: you still have to show valid ID at the entrance, even when the operator holds the tickets.

The official ticket is sold on tickets.hh.gr and at the ticket offices at the entrances. It is valid for one entry on the chosen date and slot, cannot be refunded and can be changed up to two hours before the slot, at most twice. Details are on our Acropolis tickets page.

How to read what is included

Before you book, go through the listing with these questions. The answers are usually in the "includes" and "not included" sections and in the option you choose.

Entry ticket

Is the €30 Acropolis ticket included in your option, or only listed as an extra? Words like "skip the line" or "fast track" only mean a pre-booked time slot.

Museum ticket

For tours with the Acropolis Museum, check whether the €20 museum ticket is in the price. Reduced and free museum tickets are only sold at the museum desk, not online.

Time, length and route

Look at the start time and duration. A tour of the hill alone takes about two hours; with the museum, plan for half a day. Note which entrance the group uses.

Language and group size

Check the language for your exact date, not just the tour in general, and the maximum group size. On busy days a smaller group makes a real difference.

Cancellation rules

The tour's cancellation policy and the ticket's are not always the same. Official Acropolis tickets are not refundable. Read what happens if you cancel late.

Heat and closures

On some very hot days the ministry closes the site around midday, and staff strikes have closed it for whole days in the past. Ask how the operator handles that.

Meeting points near the entrances

Most tours meet somewhere close to one of the two main entrances. The exact spot is in your booking confirmation, often with a photo or a map pin. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, because the guide has to bring the whole group to the gate in its time slot.

  • Main west entrance: on the Propylaia side, reached from Dionysiou Areopagitou along the paved Pikionis path. About 12 minutes on foot from Akropoli metro station. Most groups and coach tours arrive here.
  • South entrance: on the south slope at the corner of Dionysiou Areopagitou and Thrasyllou, above the Theatre of Dionysus. About 5 minutes from Akropoli metro, and usually quieter.
  • Acropolis Museum: at Dionysiou Areopagitou 15, next to Akropoli station. A practical meeting area for tours that combine the hill and the museum.

Visitors with disabilities and anyone using the lift must enter at the main entrance, not the south entrance. Tell the operator in advance. More on routes and access on our getting to the Acropolis page.

Acropolis tours in German

Tours in English run most often. Tours in German and other languages are offered too, but usually on fewer dates and at fewer times. If you want a German-speaking guide, check the language filter for your specific date early, especially from April to October.

If no German group tour fits, there are two simple alternatives. A private tour lets you choose the language. Or you visit on your own with the official Digital Guide app, which comes with the ticket, and add a guided tour of the Acropolis Museum where the details matter most.

Acropolis guided tours: frequently asked questions

Is the entry ticket included in Acropolis tours?

Often not. Many tours price only the guide and offer the €30 Acropolis ticket as an option. Check the option you select and the "not included" list before you pay.

Do guided tours skip the line at the Acropolis?

No. There is no official priority entry. Tour groups need a time slot like everyone else and go through the same check. "Skip the line" in a listing means the ticket is booked in advance.

Which Acropolis tour is best in summer?

An early tour at the 8 am opening. From June to August midday highs average 32 to 34 °C, there is little shade, and most groups arrive between about 9 and 13 o'clock.

Can I do a private tour of the Acropolis outside opening hours?

Only through the official "Acropolis Experience": €5,000 per group of up to five people, two hours, starting at 6:00 or 20:00 on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1 April to 31 October. A guide is optional.

Do I need a guide for the Acropolis Museum too?

No. The museum is well signed and easy to visit alone. A guide helps if you want the link between the sculptures and their place on the monuments explained.

Are there Acropolis tours in German?

Yes, but on fewer dates than English tours. Check the language for your exact date, or book a private tour in the language you want.
